Trenton High School Yearbooks

Trenton’s educational institutions, through their yearbooks, provide an invaluable record of the many generations of Trentonians who have passed through their doors. Various schools have existed over the years, the most prominent being Trenton Central High School, the city’s public senior secondary institution which calls it yearbook the ‘Bobashela’. Several parochial schools existed at various times. Cathedral High School with the appropriately named ‘Cathedral’ closed its doors in 1972. Trenton Catholic Boys’ High School and its ‘Immaculata’ ceased to exist in 1962. Several of the junior high schools have also produced yearbooks. Junior High School #1, now Martin Luther King Middle School, issued the ‘Crucible’; Junior High School #2, now Carroll Robbins School, had the ‘Tiger’; Junior High School #4, now Grace Dunn Middle School, published the ‘Argus’ and Junior High School #5’s yearbook was known as the ‘Galathea’.

The only repository for Trenton’s yearbooks is the Trentoniana Collection of the Trenton Public Library. Unfortunately their collection is far from complete. Bobashelas are missing for the years 1918 thru 1921, 1944, 1957, 1961, 1983, & 1985. It is unclear when the other secondary schools started printing yearbooks. Twenty-three years of the ‘Cathedral’ are preserved (1931, 1932, 1937, 1942, 1945 thru 1949, 1954 thru 1959, 1961, 1963, 1965, 1966, 1967, 1970, 1971 & 1972). The earliest year of the ‘Immaculata’ available is 1930, with the 1937 -1939 & 1947 issues missing. Only 3 editions of the ‘Crucible’, 1950, 1952 & 1953; one of the ‘Tiger’, 1984; and 2 of the ‘Galathea’, 1948 & 1949 have been found. There are issues of the ‘Argus’ for 1928, 1929, 1931 thru 1944, 1946 thru 1948, 1953 thru 1959, 1964 & 1966.

The Trenton Historical Society’s Artifacts Committee has made filling in the gaps of missing yearbooks one its top priorities. We are seeking donations, but can arrange to make copies, or in limited circumstances will purchase, the missing yearbooks. They will be housed in the Trentoniana Collection and available for public inspection by researchers or classmates.

Please phone Wendy Nardi at the Trenton Public Library (609-392-7188), if you have one of the missing yearbooks.
