Trenton (City).  Pop. 123,356.  Situated at the head of navigation on the Delaware River (channel 20 feet). Area eight sq. mi. Penna. R. R. and Phila. & Reading R. R. Baltimore & Ohio R. R. over P. & R. R. R.  Net valuation (1931) $204,891,454.  Tax rate $3.05. Ten banks. Fire insurance rating B.

Trenton is the capital of New Jersey and county seat of Mercer County.  It is 60 miles from New York and 30 miles froon Philadelphia, the first and third 1argest cities in the United States. hence it is strategically located for industrial and commercial enterprises.  Because of its position it has unusually good passenger train service. During the last two years the Reading R. R. has built a fine new passenger station in West Trenton, and the Pennsylvania has constructed in Trenton an excellent modern freight depot, making it possible to assure the prompt movement of freight inbound and outbound.

Because of the 20 food channel in the Delaware River, steamboat service is possible between Trenton and Philadelphia. Supplementing a smaller municipally owned warehouse, Trenton is at the present time constructing elaborate warehouse and lighterage facilities. The Delaware & Raritan Canal passes through the industrial section, connecting the Delaware and Raritan Rivers, and affording a through waterway to the Port of New York. The Lincoln Highway and other interstate highways pass through Trenton, affording excellent motor truck arteries from Trenton to the South and to the West.  New Jersey’s super-highway from the Holland Tunnel under the Hudson River at Jersey City terminates at Trenton.

The city has a Commission form of Goverernment. The city's water supply is obtained from the Delaware River, the water being purified in a modern filtration and chlorination plant. The sewer system is 170 miles in length, reaching all parts of the city and terminating in an extensive sewage disposal plant built in 1926. There are about 150 miles of streets in Trenton, of which 100 miles are paved.

In addition to the public and parochial schools there are two modern business colleges with an enrollment of about 2,000 students, who come from many parts of the world. The School of Industrial Arts offers day and evening classes in fine and industrial arts and in several of the art-crafts (dress making, millinery, woodworking, metal trades, and ceramic arts). To employed men and boys, evening courses are available in the machinist, building, automobile, electrical and ceramic trades.

There are several attractive residential sections. The State Library at the State House contains approximately 150,000 books and pamphlets. There are three municipal markets, wholesale and retail, from which fresh produce from nearby farms is obtainable in season.

The 1930 U. S. Census of Distribution reports 2,035 retail stores in Trenton doing a total annual business of $77,64l,627, giving fulltime employment to 6,447 men and women and having a yearly payroll of $9,070,794. Of the stores, 1,694 are single‑store independents, 315 are chain operated, and 26 are manufacturer controlled and otherwise

There are more than 400 manufacturing establishments in Trenton, and areas immediately adjacent to the city limits. The value of manufactured products approximates $120,000,000. There are 19,000 wage earners employed by the industries within the city limits, their wages being $24,621,000. These figures do not include early 100 firms manufacturing products having a value of less than $5,000 per year. The industries of the city are well diversified, but Trenton is especially noted for its manufacture of pottery, both sanitary and dinner ware, rubber goods, both hard and soft, wire and cable, steel products and linoleum.

New industries are welcomed, but no bonus or financial inducements can be offered. The econmic industrial advantages of Trenton offset financial subsidy offered in less advantageous cities. The excellent transportation facilities, nearness to the world's most concentrated markets, supply of skilled and unskilled labor, equitable taxation, and community interest are factors which persuade manufacturers to locate in Trenton. Some desirable factory space and industrial sites are available, many of these being on, or adjacent to, the main line or branch lines of the Pennsylvania and Reading railroads. Electric power and gas is furnished by the same public utility which covers the northern half of New Jersey.
